Lighting Techniques for the Kitchen

The Right Recipe for Kitchen Lighting

Lighting requirements depend on the size and complexity of the kitchen space. While the kitchen is primarily a work area, it may also be used for dining, or as a gathering place for family and friends. Small kitchens may require only a central ceiling fixture and task lighting tucked under a cabinet. More elaborate kitchens will demand a blend of general, task and accent lighting.

Lighting in the Center of the Ceiling

A large, surface fluorescent provides the most light for the least cost. This type of fixture will supply plenty of well-diffused general lighting perfect for moving about the room safely, looking inside drawers and cabinets, and performing chores.

Undercabinet Lighting

Available in slim, energy-efficient fluorescents, miniature track lights or low-voltage linear systems, undercabinet lighting quickly and easily lights up counter tops.

Lighting the Sink or Range

Lighting Over the Kitchen Table

The kitchen table is multipurpose-used for dining, homework, hobbies or family business. A decorative pendant, operating with a dimmer control, will provide sufficient task lighting. Use the dimmer to lower the light for dining or entertaining. Mount pendant fixtures 30" above the tabletop.

Lighting an Island Counter or Breakfast Bar

These areas demand a combination of task and general lighting, like miniature low-voltage pendants. Equipped with tiny halogen bulbs, these decorative fixtures add atmosphere as well. Install pendants high enough so you can see under them and they won't block your view.

Lighting Inside Cabinets/Coves

Low-voltage linear systems equipped with miniature bulbs can be used to light the inside of cabinets or coves, accentuating the fine China or collectibles inside.
